About a year ago, Sarah Adamo walked into the Emergency Room with her husband, Jacob. He’d been dealing with some health issues which- in the 20/20 perspective hindsight offers us- had been creeping on him for longer than they realized.
11 days later… after celebrating birthdays AND anniversaries in the hospital… she walked out of the building with his wedding ring her pocket. The quick struggle was over. He wasn’t coming home. She was now a widow and a single mom of 7 kids.
Life kicked into a “new normal” for Sarah.
In this talk, she discusses a background of addiction and (in my opinion) the phenomenal way in which she walked a tight-rope of NOT empowering or enabling an addict YET NOT shunning and isolating them, either. Secrets have power; freedom is found in the light. Yet people only walk in the light when they feel safe…
Will her approach work for everyone? No. In fact, when safety is a concern, it can’t. It shouldn’t.
But, it’s the kindness of the Lord that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). And it’s His expression of mercy and covenant loyalty that expresses the “weightier” matters of grace.
What else do you need to know about Sarah?
Well, she’s learned to walk this out in front of her kids WITHOUT leaning on the kids AND without giving them more than they can- or should- handle. She leans on a support system, yet allows the kids to see her express grief and heartache and anger and all of the other emotions…
It’s a phenomenal lesson they’re learning, as the truth is that we pick up more by osmosis from our family of origin than any other place.
